May 30, 2008 - Gov.
Matt Blunt awarded a $40,517 grant check to Chillicothe Thursday
to help preserve the Livingston County Courthouse. The grant is
part of the Missouri Heritage Properties Program, which helps
preserve the state's historic, publicly-owned buildings.
"County courthouses and other county-owned buildings serve
as the centers for public life and are important anchors for the
hearts of these communities," Gov. Blunt said as he stood
on the steps of the courthouse Thursday. "This award will
assist the Chillicothe community with the preservation of this
important historic resource and will provide an innovative
opportunity to use historic preservation funds to generate
economic growth and investments in Missouri downtowns." The
Livingston County Commission was awarded the grant to assist
with the exterior masonry on the courthouse. The restoration
project includes the masonry work on the north, south, east, and
west elevations of the building. The funding will help repair
damaged mortar joints, hairline cracks and step casing joints.
Damaged stone areas will be patched and steel lintels will be
cleaned, primed and painted. The courthouse is listed in the
National Register of Historic Places. Eva
Danner, presiding commissioner, stated, "We are very
pleased that the state of Missouri is willing to help at a local
level with this grant procedure." She went on to say that
the commission felt good about being awarded this grant because
the Livingston County courthouse matched all three criterion,
which included: the focus on court houses, being a DREAM
community and a historical preservation project. The Missouri
Heritage Properties Program was launched in September 2007, and
complements Gov. Blunt's DREAM (Downtown Revitalization and
Economic Assistance for Missouri) Initiative, which is helping
to create new growth and economic development opportunities in
the hearts of Missouri communities, Chillicothe being one of
those such communities. Chillicothe was chosen as a DREAM
community in 2007.
