Public Water Supply District No. 3, which is in the midst of its biggest improvement project in its 25-year history has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The announcement was made last week by Gov. Jay Nixon. “During tough economic times, this infusion of grant funding will help the district protect its citizens and the environment by making necessary drinking water improvements,” Nixon said.
The district will use the grant for the construction of water system improvements including a new elevated water storage tank in Avalon, transmission mains and pump station. It will use the grant in conjunction with loan funds from the Department of Natural Resources’ State Revolving Fund, funds from the water district, and a nearly $500,000 Community Development Block Grant awarded by Green Hills Regional Planning Commission. The project is estimated to cost $1.9 million and is expected to be completed in April 2010.
Bill Potts, water district superintendent, said new 6-inch water lines will be laid from a new pump station on Route Z to the new 200,000-gallon storage tank and from the pump station to the Blue Mound water tower. The lines will replace older and smaller ones.
