Working together, the Livingston County Commissioners and the American Red Cross have prepared a mass care sheltering trailer to be located in Livingston County.
The 6-foot-by-12-foot trailer contains: 40 regular cots, 10 jumbo cots, 40 adult comfort kits, 24 children’s comfort kits, 50 blankets, two 5-gallon drink cambros, a food cambro, a coffee maker with cups, a shelter manager’s kit and supplies for a 50-person shelter.
“This trailer will enable the Red Cross volunteers in Livingston County to immediately open a shelter when needed following a natural disaster,” said Ken Cope, emergency services director of Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Red Cross. “Previously, these supplies would have been brought in from Kansas City or other locations. Supplemental and ongoing support for an emergency shelter will be provided by the Kansas City Chapter.”
According to Livingston County Commissioner Eva Danner, the cost of the cot trailer for Livingston County was $5,000. All other costs were covered with donations.
Those interested in becoming Red Cross volunteers and being trained in mass care sheltering are asked to call Sara Loar, mass care manager of the Greater Kansas City Chapter. Her toll-free number is 1-800 383-8408.
